What is Conjunctivitis ?

It is basically a thin tissue that lies over white part of eye. It can be vision-threatening problem. It is also called pink eye. It’s a very common problem especially among children. It may happen in one or both eyes. It is communicable disease. Though it is a very minor eye infection but if ignored for long can lead to partial or complete eyesight loss. It can be treated and prevented. Some kind of pink eye can go away their own, other may require treatment.
Symptoms of Conjunctivitis:
  • Redness in eye that’s why it is called pink eye.
  • White or green discharge from eyes.
  • Burning in eyes.
  • Itching in eyes.
  • Blurred vision etc.
  • Swollen eyelids.
  • Increased sensitivity to light.
  • Gritty feeling in eye.
  • Crusts form on eye lid overnight.
  • Eye pain.
Causes of Conjunctivitis:
  • Viruses: through cold, exposure to coughing and sneezing.
  • Allergies: from dust etc.
  • Bacteria: it can occur from one’s own skin or respiratory system. It can also be transmitted via insects, poor hygiene or with use of expired or contaminated eye makeup.
  • Sexually transmitted bacteria.
  • Chemicals: like shampoo, air pollution, swimming in water containing chlorine.
How to diagnose Conjunctivitis:
  • Patient History: is examined by the doctor considering factors from how long patient is facing difficulty and whether and change in weather conditions contribute to it.
  • Visual acuity measurements: it is done to ensure and check that to what level patient vision has been affected.
  • Evaluation of inner structure of eye: tests are done to check if and internal damage to tissues or structure of eyes which can harm eye in future.
Advise to Contact Lens Wearers
People who wear contact lenses and suffer from pink eye are advised to discontinue the use of lenses till the problem is not corrected.

Sometimes due to use of contact lens, pink eye can occur and it varies from patient to patient. Sometimes contact lens change, other times disinfection solution change is considerable.

Prevention from Conjunctivitis:
  • Never share personal items like towels, etc
  • Don’t share contact lenses with friends
  • Keep a handy disinfectant and use it frequently, for eg. Sanitizer
  • Frequently clean shared places and things, like washroom vanities, shared phone with antiseptic cleaner.
  • Cover your nose and mouth while coughing and sneezing.
  • Suffer people suffer from seasonal allergies, they can contact their doctor beforehand and take medicine as prescribed.
  • Use swim goggles during swimming
  • Change pillow covers frequently.
  • Handle and clean contact lenses properly.

Points to follow for prevention from spread of Conjunctivitis:
  • Don’t touch eyes with hands
  • Wash hands thoroughly
  • Change your towel and washcloth daily
  • Don’t use anyone else’s eye cosmetics
  • Don’t use eye cosmetics like kajal, mascara
How to Get relieved during Conjunctivitis:
  • Apply cotton cloth or cotton pad soaked in lukewarm water by closing eye lids.

Treatment for Pink eye depends upon the cause. It the type of infection is detected then it’s fairly simple to correct it.
